Ally’s Birthday Party

by Jessica May 23, 2012

So on March 3rd, we were invited to Ally’s birthday party. I never really get invited to these since they seem to fall during the day while Grant and I are working, but this birthday party was on the weekend so we were cool enough to get an invite! They had the birthday party at Kiddie Acres which is a kid’s sized amusement park in Austin. It is really close to where we live so that was convenient! I had a BUSY day to say the least. We were lucky enough to have Simon and Sarah Stay with us that weekend. It was the weekend before Grant left for his training in Chicago, I was hosting Elana’s Baby Shower  that morning, then came to Ally’s birthday party, and then were able to spend some more time with Simon and Sarah. So to say the least, it was busy!

How to Resize an Existing Pillow Cover

by Jessica May 7, 2012

When I was younger, my mom bought me these two black and white pillows for my room. I loved black, white, and red in almost everything and really haven’t changed. I still love the pillow cases, but was never happy with the actual feather pillows inside. They were VERY prickly since I am assuming there wasn’t a lot of down inside. I decided to donate the insides and keep the pillow case cover especially since it was nice sturdy fabric as well as had a nice zipper on the bottom of the cases. My next issue was that these pillow cases were a custom size that most stores don’t sell, so, I went to Ikea and bought two of their 20″x20″ down feather pillows, but of course the cases were too big. So, I decided to make the cases smaller so that I wouldn’t have to buy a special sized pillow for these cases.

Our new Couch

by Jessica April 12, 2012

I don’t know why I am blogging about couches so much, but here is another one. I feel bad that this post is so late because we got this couch a month or two ago, and  I helped my friend Ashley find one for herself, and she has already blogged about her new couch so I felt I needed to get moving.  So, here is my post finally. As you all know, we wanted the Ikea Arild couch which is pictured below, but we just can’t find any being sold second hand since you cannot buy them new.

Benefit Cosmetics House Party

by Jessica March 28, 2012

I was lucky enough to be chosen by benefit cosmetics! A house party is where they send you their products for free, you invite your friends over and show them their products. There are samples that they get to take home and they are able to try out the products without feeling pressured to buy anything.

The Girl on Fire

by Jessica March 25, 2012

So if you have read the Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins and liked them or even if you haven’t, you are probably aware of the movie that just came out. I am always wary of movies based on books because the books are ALWAYS better and lots of people never read the books because of a bad movie. This movie was great, more below about that below. Here is an excerpt from The Hunger Games which describes her costume so you can see what I was trying to recreate:

“So, Katniss, about your costume for the opening ceremonies. My partner, Portia, is the stylist for your fellow tribute, Peeta. And our current thought is to dress you in complementary costumes,” says Cinna. “As you know, it’s customary to reflect the flavor of the district.”
For the opening ceremonies, you’re supposed to wear something that suggests your district’s principal industry. District 11, agriculture. District 4, fishing. District 3, factories. This means that coming from District 12, Peeta and I will be in some kind of coal miner’s getup. Since the baggy miner’s jumpsuits are not particularly becoming, our tributes usually end up in skimpy outfits and hats with headlamps. One year, our tributes were stark naked and covered in black powder to represent coal dust. It’s always dreadful and does nothing to win favor with the crowd. I prepare myself for the worst.
“So, I’ll be in a coal miner outfit?” I ask, hoping it won’t be indecent.
“Not exactly. You see, Portia and I think that coal miner thing’s very overdone. No one will remember you in that. And we both see it as our job to make the District Twelve tributes unforgettable,” says Cinna.
I’ll be naked for sure, I think.
“So rather than focus on the coal mining itself, we’re going to focus on the coal,” says Cinna. Naked and covered in black dust, I think. “And what do we do with coal? We burn it,” says Cinna.
“You’re not afraid of fire, are you, Katniss?” He sees my expression and grins. A few hours later, I am dressed in what will either be the most sensational or the deadliest costume in the opening ceremonies. I’m in a simple black unitard that covers me from ankle to neck. Shiny leather boots lace up to my knees. But it’s the fluttering cape made of streams of orange, yellow, and red and the matching headpiece that define this costume. Cinna plans to light them on fire just before our chariot rolls into the streets.
“It’s not real flame, of course, just a little synthetic fire Portia and I came up with. You’ll be perfectly safe,” he says. But I’m not convinced I won’t be perfectly barbecued by the time we reach the city’s center.
My face is relatively clear of makeup, just a bit of highlighting here and there. My hair has been brushed out and then braided down my back in my usual style. “I want the audience to recognize you when you’re in the arena,” says Cinna dreamily. “Katniss, the girl who was on fire.”

French Macarons

by Jessica March 24, 2012

One day after seeing so many beautiful pictures of french Macarons, I decided it was time to attempt them. I made these before the Super Bowl, and I decided this was the dessert of choice for me to bring. I ended up making the Macarons three different times. The first two they tasted great but didn’t have the official “look” so I tried again. Below I will share what I learned, what recipe, I used and the myths I decided to not care about.
